Interior decorating is all about self-expression and creating an environment that reflects and comforts our inner selves. Though we take inspiration from magazines, blogs, decorating sites and other people’s homes, we yearn for a place to be uniquely our own. One of the ways this can be achieved is through rare decor.
Think back on the tours you’ve taken through people’s homes. The objects that seem most interesting are the ones you haven’t seen before, the ones that stand out as one of a kind, or rare finds. These are the things that can’t be replicated and make your home truly unique.
But what constitutes as “rare decor” and where can it be found? As you can imagine, there aren’t entire stores dedicated to just selling rare interior trinkets. Fortunately, you won’t need a specialty store in order to gather some uncommon items to enhance your decorating. Here are some ideas:
Use Art
As long as you’re buying from an artist and not from a store that sells prints, you can get stunning, one-of-a-kind art to use in your home. This can come in the form of a painting, sculpture, pottery, and more. You can also find hand-made and artistic pieces of furniture that have either been painted or carved.
Use Pieces From Nature
Nature doesn’t follow an exact pattern, so it’s a great way of finding exclusive decorations, especially if it’s something you picked up yourself. It can be an artisan cutting board that shows the unique grains of the wood, or cuts of raw amethyst or quartz. You can also use find coasters, bookends, and candle holders made of agate, all with their individual colors and angles.
Look for Antiques
Many people love using antiques for the very reason that they are more exclusive, especially antiques from other countries. Repurposing antiques from a bygone era is an art of its own, and a wonderful way of bringing functionality and life to these older items.
Use Foreign Pieces
Anything from another culture or country is going to be extremely unique and have people asking where it’s from. You can find such items online, but if you manage to pick up decorations during your trips abroad, even better. It’s much more personal when you have a story behind your decorating pieces.
